Reformed University Fellowship Committee

The RUF Committee has been recently established as an offshoot of the MNA Committee, with the express purpose of establishing an RUF work within the bounds of New River Presbytery. To that end, we are praying and working toward RUF at WVU by the start of the 2017 school year.

Here is the letter sent to all NRP churches recently:

To all the PCA Congregations of West Virginia,

On behalf of the pastors and elders of New River Presbytery, we want to share an exciting new vision with you for an RUF at WVU in 2016!

As some of you already know, Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) is our own college ministry of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). RUF grew alongside the PCA in 1970’s and is now serving on about 150 campuses from Florida to New York to California to Mexico! Like our other two missionary agencies, MTW and MNA, RUF facilitates, recruits, and trains staff to pastor college students. These campus ministers serve as home missionaries, raising their support annually - while preaching and teaching the Gospel on campus throughout the year. For years now, RUF is considered the best outreach for growing local churches in the PCA! Their vision is simple, “Reaching students for Christ and Equipping students to serve.”

Since the 1970’s, RUF has been feeding our churches across the nation with college students who have been discipled by an ordained PCA pastor. For instance, a recent graduate relocates for a job into your hometown - ready to join your church and serve the Lord in your community. Even though we do not have RUF, perhaps you have seen some of these RUF grads, several of us have and would love to share our stories with you.

SO WHY do you want the LORD to bring RUF to WVU’s mission field? Many of these 31,000 students are from your town and will impact your region in the years ahead. Like the PCA, RUF standards are very high for their staff, in comparison to other college ministries. RUF Pastors are graduates of seminary who must be examined and ordained by their local presbytery, since they are PCA pastors (like yours) sent to the university. And as the sons and daughters of our churches go off to college, they will have a PCA pastor with them throughout college.

HOW is this possible for us? Here’s one example from God’s Word and second one is from your own back yard in West Virginia.

  1. Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. Perhaps the LORD will work for us, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few.” (v6)
Like Jonathan, we are “few” in WV. But God saved Israel that day with a few. This is how God often works. In 1 Samuel 14, Jonathan, alone with his armor bearer, conquered an entire Philistine Army camp, and “So the LORD saved Israel that day”.

  2. Over the past 10 years God has planted two new PCA churches in New River Presbytery. Together they cost around half a million dollars, and God provided it all!

SO WHAT can you do? Ask your Session and church to prayerfully consider joining this new vision. This support base is twofold, it must be prayer and financial.

  1. Will you commit to praying for RUF to come to WVU?

  2. Will you consider supporting it with one time gifts or a monthly pledge?

RUF was designed to be owned and operated by its local PCA presbytery, and they are asking us to raise 40% each year. We need to reach our goal of $40,000 by March of 2016, and we currently have met our first goal having $5000 in the WVU-RUF account in PCA Office in Lawrenceville, GA. You can donate there, or through New River Presbytery by contacting Rev. John Rollins (our presbytery treasurer). We are grateful to be connected to you and partnering with you in Gospel Ministry.

On behalf of the RUF Vision Committee, please pray for your churches and presbytery as we consider this serious matter in our May 16th presbytery meeting! We are seeking God’s Wisdom and confirmation through you, His People.

For Christ in West Virginia!
